There are so many reported cases of “Child Pornography” in the Philippines. It is known as “child sexual abuse images”, an act that exploits children for sexual stimulation. This taboo and ruthless activity falls under “Republic Act No. 9775” or “Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009“—which is a law that exterminates any worst forms of child labor. However, despite of the mentioned law’s implementation, Child Pornography cases are still growing each day that passes by.
In Cebu, a 33-year-old man named Nelson Turayno was sentenced of 20-year imprisonment after proving that he is “guilty” of performing one of the rampant cyber crimes today—Child Pornography. He was originally charged for violation of section 4[c][2] of RA 10175, which is punishable by 40 years imprisonment. However, under his plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to another offense under section 4[b] of RA 9775.
“Turayno preyed on vulnerable children, sexually abusing young Filipino boys for his own deviant desires. He then recorded himself raping these young children in videos that he shared with other offending pedophiles around the world—men who selfishly consume videos of suffering children only to satisfy their perverse lusts. They care nothing for the trauma and violence they inflict on the most precious members of our society,” said lawyer John Tanagho, International Justice Mission Cebu Field Office Director.
Aside from fulfilling a 20-year sentence, Turayno was also ordered to pay P2 million in fines by Judge Ramon Daomilas Jr..
The punishment that has been bestowed upon Turayno’s head is just right and a well-earned consequence for his loathsome behavior. Basing on the article, he has a gruesome desire reserved for the young Filipino boys. It just implies that his gender is not straight, and as well as his thinking.
This kind of behavior must be stopped as early as now. Children’s vital role of youth in nation building must be given an importance and their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, emotional, psychological and social well-being shall be promoted and protected, not abused and driven by such impious acts. Children may be one third of our population, but, they are all of our future.
Peter Robbins once said, “Once you look at a picture of child pornography, that counts as possession which is punishable by jail.”. The victims of this unrighteous act, in the future, could possibly become doctors that save lives of many people, teachers that help young minds in their generation academically and morally, businessman/woman that might contribute to our economy’s growth, and someone who they aspire to be. If this act is not going to be put on its breaking point, it will not cost us money, but our nation—for children are the dreamers of the future. So tell me, how could they dream, if they no longer have the courage to do so?
